Weingut Joh. Bapt. Schäfer

Today in Germany there are quite a few family properties among the many thousands wineries that are challenging the status of the large traditional estate. Given the fact that almost all of the noble estates are sadly under performing, at least a dozen of the new comers have already surpassed the old guard in quality. Since 1997, Weingut Josh. Bapt. Schäfer has been in the capable hands of the young and talented Sebastian Schäfer. It is one of these previously little-known estates that first stepped into the limelight with its victory in the competition for the best Riesling of 1991 (organized by the magazine Feinschmecker). Since then Sebastian has convincingly proven that this award was not by chance. Each successive vintage has been better than the one that preceded it, as if mother nature played only a secondary role. From liter bottling up to trockenbeerenauslese, the wines are of astonishing quality, generally characterized by full-bodied depth paired with tangy acidity. This region is also stepping into the limelight, with the help of Donnhoff's success to pave the way.

Weingut Philipps-Eckstein

This tiny estate in Graache-Schaferei comprises three hectares of the famous Graacher Himmelreich and Domprobst vineyards. Patrick Philipps, having run the business for the past five years, places quality as his first priority. Old vines, low yields and steep, well-drained vineyards assure the quality and style of these beautifully made wines. Philipps' line of wines is comprised of very small quantities of individual parcels vinified separately in stainless steel to attain his clean winemaking style. Each wine is remarkably distinct - from the elegance and balance from dry Riesling to the stunning noble late harvest wines. Until recently, all of the estate's production had been sold to private customers.

Weingut Markus Fries

Markus and Cecile Fries exemplify the "Renaissance of German Wines". The formula is very simple: top vineyards sites with a high level of slate, old vines (average age 60 years) and mostly un-grafted vines. The cultivation and maintenance of the vineyards is part of an ecological concept, and all the work is done by hand. The grapes are picked by hand, not by the bunch but by the grape! They then go through an intense selection where only the healthiest grapes are kept. This is followed by very gentle press and spontaneous fermentation with wild yeast. The wines are vinified and aged in traditional 1,000 liter oak barrels, with no filtration until bottling. These wines have a sauvage quality that is seldom seen in modern German winemaking today.
